Mar Adentro -The sea inside
(Mar Adentro) - Winner of an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, this is an absorbing masterpiece about a quadriplegic's desire to die with dignity. Based on the true story of Ramon Sampedro (played by Javier Bardem), who was left a quadriplegic after a swimming accident some 28 years prior, the film focuses on the final months of Ramon's life and his attempts to win the right to an assisted suicide through the courts. Following a lengthy and mostly unsuccessful struggle, Ramon decides to take matters into his own hands with some help from a voluntary euthanasia group and grudging loved ones. Although this is a poignant and moving film, it is also packed with humour. It has sixty film festival wins. Directed by Alejandro Amenabar, and stars Javier Bardem, Lola Dueñas and Belen Ruedas. (From Spain, in Spanish, English subtitles) (Drama) 2004 (Rpt) M (A) WS

Annelies.
